Walking and cycling

Around 5.5 million walking trips and 300,000 cycling trips are made in London every day. We want to ensure that spectators can use these healthy and sustainable travel options to get to the excitement at the Games.

London 2012 is working closely with Transport for London, London boroughs and London’s walking and cycling communities to deliver improvements to the network of walking and cycling paths linking different parts of London to the Olympic Park and other venues.

These enhancements will not only benefit the thousands of people expected to walk or cycle to the Games, but will provide an enjoyable and useful travel option in legacy.

We are currently considering plans for improvements walking and cycling routes into the Olympic Park and linking with River Zone venues.
  • Lea Valley North – routes to the north of the Olympic Park through the Lee Valley Regional Park
  • Epping Forest – a new route from the north-east of the Olympic Park through Wanstead and Epping Forest
  • Elevated Greenway – follows the route of the northern outfall sewer east from the Olympic Park to Beckton
  • Lea Valley South, The Royal Docks and Greenwich – routes from the south of the Olympic Park to the Isle of Dogs, and on to Maritime Greenwich and other River Zone venues via the Thames Path
  • Limehouse Cut – routes Limehouse Basin to the Olympic Park via the Limehouse Cut
  • Victoria Park and Stepney – connects the Olympic Park to Islington and Limehouse Basin via the Regents and Hertford Union Canals
  • Hackney Parks – connects green spaces in Hackney from Finsbury Park to the western entrance of the Olympic Park

We are also looking at possible improvements to routes connecting other London venues and venues outside London. Any improvements would be carried out from early 2009 onwards.

As well as infrastructure improvements, London 2012 will also be delivering an ‘Active Spectator Programme’, designed to encourage more spectators and workforce to walk and cycle to the Games.

Path closures resulting from the Olympic Park construction

It may be necessary from time to time to close existing walking and cycling routes within or next to the Olympic Park due to construction activity. We will do our best to keep these closures to a minimum, and will keep you updated here about any closures affecting these paths.
