A £100m upgrade has begun to treble
capacity and boost accessibility at Stratford Regional Station.
Stratford Regional Station will be one of the main gateways for spectators to get to the sporting action and cultural excitement in the Olympic Park. During the Games, eight rail lines will service the station, making it a major public transport interchange.
Around 60 per cent of all spectators travelling by rail and around 45 per cent of all spectators visiting the Games will arrive and depart through this station.
We are making more than £100m of improvements to the station to treble its capacity and make it more accessible. These enhancements will allow around 60,000 spectators to pass through the station each morning during the Games and help the station cater for increased passenger demand in the future.
Today, about 37,000 passengers pass through Stratford in the three hour morning peak period. This number is expected to rise to 55,000 in 2012, and by 2016 about 83,000 passengers are expected to use the station in the morning peak.
During the Olympic Games around 118,000 passengers are expected to use the station during morning peak periods.
Enhancements
Our enhancements are focused on boosting capacity and accessibility at the station, reducing congestion and improving passenger flow. Work will be finished by the end of 2010, which means passengers can experience the benefits nearly two years before the Games.
- Nine new lifts will improve accessibility at the station.
- Eight new staircases will provide better access throughout the station and reduce congestion.
- Widened, lengthened and decluttered platforms will boost capacity, reduce congestion and allow longer trains to service the station.
- New westbound Central Line and DLR platforms will increase capacity.
- A new mezzanine level entrance will reduce congestion.
- A reopened subway will make it easier to change between rail, Underground and DLR services.
- Lifts and stairs will be swapped to improve passenger flow.
Taxi rank has moved
To make way for the construction of a new high level entrance to the station and the new pedestrian bridge that will link it with the Stratford City development and the Olympic Park, the taxi rank and coach stand at Stratford station have been temporarily relocated.
View the map The taxi rank is indicated by figures 1 and 2 while the National Express A9 coach stand is now located in the adjacent dedicated lay-by (Fig3). Taxis may also be found in the feeder rank next to the shopping centre.
Pedestrians and cyclists have been accommodated by the shared-use path (Fig.4) while the cycle stands that previously stood next to the taxis have been relocated to the main cycle parking area to the right of the station exit doors.
All of these arrangements are expected remain in place until late 2010 when they will be replaced by new permanent facilities.
