Sheila Birkin's nomination story

"I am humbled by this nomination as I am a very ordinary person. I love the village where I have lived for 45 years. Important to me is helping bring people together to build a supportive community. I have been involved in a heap of local organisations, including the Shoreham Society which is leading on the village diamond jubilee celebrations. But it is important to me that we care about others from our community who suffer hardship. I have organised a number of fundraising events for famine and flood victims but these have been successful due to the generosity of others who have donated and helped. Working with vulnerable children for 30 years in a London borough made me aware of how privileged we are in our beautiful village. In retirement I commit to try my best to mae a difference to those under stress and who are suffering hardship."
