Olwyn's nomination story

"The death of my daughter born with hydeocephalus and spina bifida changed my whole life at 20. It made me aware of the dedication of caring people and the many needs in the community. Throughout my life i have devoted myself to fundraising for a variety of good causes and charities. Even during my 13 years as a teacher in Hong Kong, I raised funds to bring to the UK my 30 Chinese a level students from underprivileged backgrounds. However the opportunity to make a real difference has been given me in my current employment as a pr ambassador for Sainsburys. I work for 16 hours weekly unpaid to sort food and fundraise for the Wingate Centre, a respite home for physically and mentally handicapped children. I sort flowers for the elderly as well as working in schools promoting healthy eating, cultural awareness and integration. I won the Scottish Power Cheshire Volunteer of the year and the CAT Radio volunteer award and this has helped promote community awareness."
