Kayleigh's nomination story

"My brother, best friend, soul mate and my life. That`s what Jokey was to me and from as young as I can remember I have been involved in his care. When I was 7 Jake was diagnosed with CP, a severe learning and physical disability. He had a lot of health issues and mum had to spend lots of time in Hospital with Jake and attend appointments. Every time Jake would need more medication/treatment, I supported my mum through cuddles and reassurance and also helping out with Jake needs by learning how to tube feed him and use special equipment. In 2010 Jake had phomonia and spent 5 months in intensive care, mum was pregnant and only had a few weeks left and I was studying for my GCSE`s. I new I had to be strong and brave for my brother and mum. It was touch and go for weeks and Jake got re diagnosed with Leighs Disease which had deteriorated rapidly. Mum and step dad fought hard to get Jake home. He now needed 24 hour care and has ventilated with a trache. This was life changing for us all. I still remained brave and became trained in BLS, Trache, Ventilation suction and physio. I was determined to do this to enable Jake to come out of hospital for his last few months. Jake passed away April 2011. He is now my guardian angel and all I do now is for him. I passed my GCSE`s and now I am at college studying level 2 childcare. I am inspired by Jakes braveness and if he could go through all that with a smile right till the end then I can achieve my goals for him."
