"Last summer, I received the Volunteering Scholarship from my University and volunteered in Ghana. Prior to leaving I contacted local newspapers and the ITV News to appeal for donations. I received a warm response, taking four suitcases of donated items and over £200. In Ghana I painted, built and taught. Teaching was my favourite; the children were well behaved and eager to learn regardless of their understanding. I also visited an orphanage, where I gave the donated children's items too. In recent years, I have participated in the 10Km KEMP Hospice run and in October ran the Bupa Birmingham Run for Alzheimer`s Society. I and my siblings have together supported our mother in recovering from her car accident. As a family we are now stronger and my mother is getting better every day. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had and want to make a difference to others."
