Helene's nomination story

"After an education at the Royal Ballet School, a brain injury left Helene a wheelchair user. Determined to stay active, Helene trained in Swimming, Athletics, and was in the GB teams for Wheelchair Basketball and Adaptive Rowing. She has silver medals in wheelchair basketball at 2 Paralympic World Cups and was Gold medalist at the Rowing World Championships and Beijing Paralympics. Injury and ill health prevent her from training but she remains in contact with her fellow athletes and follows their progress closely. She was Surrey Disability Sports Officer, championing disability sports in the area and has worked for the Youth Sport Trust as Athlete Mentor. She holds accolades including BBC South Sports Woman of the Year and 2 county Disabled Athlete of the Year awards. Helene is an inspiration to everyone she meets having overcome illness, injury, tragedy and triumph. An amazing woman."
