Anne's nomination story

"AbleChildAfrica: We work through local partners and Action Network for the Disabled is one of them. Started by and for young people with disabilities in Nairobi, Kenya the team have a flourishing Sport for Change programme comprising of 5 different sports, they are using sport as a tool to help young disabled people access work, training and other opportunities to help them reach their full potential. In Africa, 98% of children with disabilities do not attend school and negative beliefs, attitudes and stigma often mean they are not afforded the same life chances as their peers. This year, the wheelchair basketball team toured Kenya taking part and winning tournaments and one of the team travelled to Mozambique to try out for the paralympic team. These opportunities are rare and the team has taken on the challenge with courage and determination, and are using sport to change societal attitudes towards people with disabilities. Something the paralympic games are all about."
