Sporting legends pick hot prospects for Team Visa

Sixteen of the UK's most talented young athletes have been selected by Sir Steve Redgrave and Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson to receive Visa sponsorship, helping them prepare for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The 'Team Visa' athletes are divided into two groups - 'Hopefuls', who have proven themselves to have realistic prospects for the Beijing 2008 Games, and 'Apprentices', who are seen has potentials for London 2012 success.

The group is made up of 12 able bodied and four athletes with a disability, covering 13 sports.

They include 'Hopeful' gymnast Beth Tweddle, who won gold at the 2006 World Championships and the 2006 European Championships, and 'Apprentice' Natasha Baker, who came first in the Paralympic Equestrian-level II at the France Junior International in 2006.

The athletes will receive mentoring from Sir Steve and Dame Tanni and funding to help them with training and travel costs.

They have also been partnered in a 'buddy' system to help the less experienced 'Apprentices' learn from the 'Hopefuls'.

Visa has a long history of involvement with the Olympic Games, as a TOP partner with the IOC in an agreement that runs through to 2012.
