Dong Chao of China competes in the men's 10m Air Rifle Standing - SH1 final on Day 2 of the London 2012 Paralympic Games at The Royal Artillery Barracks.

Over 20 years younger than his main rival, the 26-year-old equalled silver medallist Jonas Jakobsson's world record of 596 in qualifying, finishing with a final score of 699.5.

Beijing gold medallist Jakobsson, winning his 29th Paralympic medal for Sweden, admitted that he had not been at his best.

He said: 'The way I shot today, I knew I was too far away from Dong. I would have had to have been at the top of my game. The world record is still mine but I would have had to have been right up there to get it (gold).'

Germany's Josef Neumaier, took the bronze after winning a shoot-off with Republic of Korea's Lee Seungchul. Neumaier secured the medal on the third shot.

He said: 'I have never seen a shoot-off that went into a third shot, at the Olympic Games or anywhere else. Usually this ends with one shot. But luck was on my side.'

Despite qualifying second for the final, Neumaier was delighted with his bronze.

He said: 'It took 12 years since my last Paralympic medal. This medal gives me a lift, I am now 54. That means I am still capable of shooting.'

Meanwhile, Olivera Nakovska-Bikova became FYR Macedonia's first Paralympic gold medallist when she won the women's 10m Air Pistol - SH1 event.

She was in a class of her own, qualifying in first place for the final with a world and Paralympic record of 381 points.

She followed up in the final, with her total 475.7 points setting a new Paralympic Games record.

Reigning world champion Marina Klimenchenko of Russia took silver with 469.6 points, while bronze went to Sareh Javanmardidodmani of Iran (469.0).
