Taking place on 3-4 March 2012, Music Nation will be a unique collaboration of the UK's orchestral and music-making communities, and a key feature of the BBC’s contribution to the Cultural Olympiad.
Highlights of the event will include a flash mob performance of The Marriage of Figaro across Wales, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra premiering a newly commissioned fanfare from composer James MacMillan, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra hosting five days of concerts and events in the Shetland Islands.
Elsewhere, there will be a series of concerts curated by the BBC Concert Orchestra involving local ensembles, while the Barbican Centre will host 'Urban Classic', a collaboration between a symphony orchestra and stars of the UK’s urban music scene.
From world-class performances to community workshops, Music Nation aims to engage as many people as possible. It is scheduled to take place in 45 locations, with over 65,000 tickets available.
Ruth Mackenzie, London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Director, said: 'With events all over the country, we hope as many people as possible will join in with Music Nation as they prepare for the London 2012 Festival and a fantastic summer of cultural celebration. This unprecedented partnership demonstrates the strength of the UK’s creative communities and how the Cultural Olympiad is bringing organisations together to create truly memorable events.'
The London 2012 Festival will bring leading artists from around the world
together from 21 June-9 September 2012 in a UK-wide festival.
