Highlights

South Africa made their Paralympic debut at the 1964 Games in Tokyo before the country was banned from competing at the Olympic Games because of apartheid. They sent a team of nine in 1964 to compete in archery, athletics, swimming and weightlifting. Their all-time medal count of 251 comes from participation in nine Games. South Africa came sixth in the overall medal table at the Beijing Paralympic Games. Natalie DU TOIT was their most successful Paralympic medallist winning four gold medals in swimming. Oscar PISTORIUS and Hilton LANGENHOVEN were both triple gold medallists in athletics.
