The Tate Movie
Project organisers: Tate
Theme: Culture
The Tate Movie resulted in the production of a 30 - minute animation film made by and for children across the UK. The film, ‘The Itch of the Golden Nit,’ was broadcast on the BBC and screened in art galleries cinemas across the country.
The film was brought together by Tate and the creative magic of Aardman Animation, with celebrity voiceovers from David Walliams, Vic Reeves, Catherine Tate and Miranda Hart, among many others.
Children worked together in workshops to develop their ideas for the themes, narrative and characters for the film. They were introduced to the process of developing characters using ideas about their heroes and the reasons why they admire different people.
Activities included a nationwide programme of animation workshops (which engaged over 9,000 children), a digital resource for every primary school and interactive website. Additionally, over 25,000 children contributed to the movie online – this resulted in a Guinness World Record for most individual contributions to an animated film.
In the Zone
Project organisers: The Wellcome Trust
Theme: Education
In the Zone is a £5m initiative funded by The Wellcome Trust, linking science to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Its primary aim is to engage people with the science of how the human body works during sport, exercise, performance and rest. The project explores such questions such as: How do athletes move so fast and jump so high?
As the world focuses on the extraordinary feats of human performance that will take place in London this summer, the Wellcome Trust is leading a London 2012-inspired UK-wide initiative to engage the public with the science of how their own body works during exercise, movement and rest. With free experiment kits for every UK school and an interactive touring exhibition for the whole family, there will be an opportunity for everyone to explore what happens in our bodies and minds when we take part in sport, exercise or everyday movement.
StreetGames – Legacy Leaders
Project organisers: StreetGames
Theme: Sport
Legacy Leaders aims to build, develop and sustain a network of grassroots projects in disadvantaged communities that help more young people to access sport. It is hoped that the programme will see one million young people living in deprived areas access sport.
Operating in some of the most deprived areas in the UK, the programme aims to ensure that the inspirational power of the 2012 Games is felt at grassroots level and as a result, all young people have the opportunity to take part in sport regardless of their social background or where they live.
StreetGames Legacy Leaders is based on the concept of doorstep sport, which is delivered to young people where, when and how they want it. This can range from five-a-side football or basketball on a housing estate, to handball sessions in the local community centre. Coaches and young volunteers are recruited from the same communities as the young people the projects seek to engage with, which helps promote greater cohesion within neighbourhoods.
