New images of London's Olympic Stadium released to celebrate World Olympic Day in UK
Stunning new images from inside London's proposed centrepiece Olympic Stadium were unveiled today, revealing the best ever Olympic Games venue experience for athletes, the Olympic Family, spectators and media.
The images highlight the advantages for athletes and spectators of a stadium purpose built for athletics and athletes.
The images also show the inside of the Olympic stadium after the Games as a new 25,000 seat national athletics stadium which will also house the proposed London Olympic Institute, a new Olympic centre of excellence for elite and community sport.
Minister for Sport, Richard Caborn said: "The design ideas for the proposed 2012 Olympic Stadium are visionary and will not only transform the look and feel of east London, but will also provide an inspiration to the rest of the country that this kind of first-class design can exist in every city. This will be a showcase to the world of the innovation and talent in design that we have here in the UK, and will leave a legacy for future generations to enjoy."
The new images provide the international sporting community with the first sense of what conditions and services would be like inside the Olympic Stadium and would help shape an international tendering process if the London bid is successful in the IOC vote on 6 July.
Commenting on the new Stadium designs, British Olympian and London 2012 Vice Chairman Alan Pascoe said: "This stadium sends an architectural message to the world that the needs and welfare of the athletes will be at the heart of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This is a stadium that athletes will want to compete in and spectators will want to visit. Olympic and world records will be set."
London's proposed Olympic and Paralympic Stadium will feature panoramic views from every section and level of the stadium. "Spectators will be able to see the runners in all eight lanes around the bends and down the home straight from their seats and without having to stand up or move to other viewing locations," Pascoe said.
Final warm-up facilities will be located inside the stadium adjacent to the final report area, further enhancing conditions for athletes inside the stadium which will include state-of-the-art track surfaces.
"I would love to have run in a stadium like this in London in front of a home crowd," said dual British Olympic gold medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes.
"To have a dedicated 25,000 seat athletics venue in London after the Games will be just amazing. We really need a first class stadium that will be used to host other championships in the future and for local community events," Holmes said.
The main stadium is a flagship of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, hosting the high profile athletics competition and Opening and Closing Ceremonies, which also featured in the internal images of the stadium released today.
Senior principal of HOK Sport and world acclaimed stadium designer Rod Sheard said the stadium design was unique for the Olympic Games and provided a model for future bidding and host cities.
"The ensuing decades will see stadia like London 2012's proposed Olympic stadium; a stadium that is built around the long term usage of the primary sport for which the stadium is intended athletics; a stadium that accommodates the sport, not a stadium that has to change the sport to meet its configuration and design after the Games," Sheard said.
"London is creating a stadium that retains athletics as its long term primary sport and this has not been done in recent Olympic history. And they are creating a state-of-the-art stadium that is able to shrink or grow to meet the demands of the sport it will be built for."
The new images, produced by Designhive with technical assistance from London 2012, show that London's Olympic stadium will feature high comfort concourse areas and hospitality services for the public and members of the Olympic Family previously unavailable in a main Olympic stadium.
New Olympic Aquatics Centre Images
Internal images of London's new Aquatics Centre in Olympic Games mode were also released today, drawing wide acclaim from local and international elite swimmers including Australian Olympic gold medallist and London 2012 ambassador, Grant Hackett.
Hackett said: "The interior design of the new aquatic centre in the east of London is fantastic. I was impressed by the outside visuals but these new images are great - each competition pool has a spectator arena around it, which means there will be a great atmosphere for the events. As an athlete I know just how important this is."
