London 2012 hits three million mark

With only eight days to go until the decision on 6 July, London 2012 today announced that it has passed the three million mark of registered supporters for its campaign to bring the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to the capital in 2012.

Some of the UK's top sporting legends and London 2012 ambassadors took time out to celebrate the milestone including Daley Thompson, Steve Cram, Colin Jackson, Karen Pickering, Stephen Parry, Rob Hayles and Mark Foster.

The star-studded line-up were gathered in the North East today for a golf day in aid of Steve Cram's own charity, COCO. Cram is one of London 2012's key ambassadors and will be alongside Dame Kelly Holmes in London's Trafalgar Square on 6 July to hear the decision about which city will host the Games in 2012.

"Three million registered supporters is a fantastic figure to reach," said Cram. "But it's not just about numbers, it's about showing that everyone in the United Kingdom is up for the Games. These are also genuine supporters people who have actively said 'this is something I want to see coming to this country' which is a very powerful message."

"My thanks go to three million people who have registered their support and continue to send letters of encouragement," said London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe, who is en route to Singapore.

"To be able to arrive in Singapore with more than three times our original target of supporters is amazing. It demonstrates the high level of support for our campaign throughout the UK and beyond and London's bid is stronger for it."

London 2012 originally set a target of last December of gaining one million signatures of support to present to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), when they meet in Singapore in July to decide which city should host the 2012 Games.

Supporters are registered through a combination of logging on to the London 2012 website, by texting their support, by ringing a hotline number or by registering in person at promotional events. Support has come from every part of the UK and every political party.

Several high profile names have registered their support for London's bid including international statesman Nelson Mandela, football players David Beckham, Michael Owen, Sol Campbell and Wayne Rooney, rock superstar Sir Mick Jagger, and actors Sir Roger Moore and Sir Ian McKellen.

David Beckham will join Olympians Sir Steve Redgrave, Daley Thompson, Jonathan Edwards, Shirley Robertson and others as part of the official London 2012 delegation in Singapore next week.
