ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: 'During the Games the IBC/MPC will play an important role in communicating the Olympic and Paralympic Games to around four billion people across the world. This consultation is a useful opportunity for Hackney residents to find out more about the plans for the media centre and provide us with feedback.'
Hackney’s Mayor, Jules Pipe, said: 'The media and broadcast centres for journalists reporting on the Games will have a high profile role in 2012 and will focus the world’s attention here. After the Games are over, our aim is to ensure the centres become a new employment hub for East London with a strong focus on media and creative industries. This consultation represents the start of the journey that will lead us to 2012 and beyond, to a vitally important legacy for Hackney.'
The IBC/MPC buildings will be made up of various facilities, including an International Broadcast Centre, Main Press Centre, transport and welcome areas. These buildings will form a unique space with state-of-the-art facilities for the world’s media during the Games. In 2012, the IBC/MPC will be a 24-hour media hub for 20,000 broadcasters, photographers and journalists. It will also contain a 1,300-space multi-story car park, studio tower with panoramic views, security area and bus drop-off area.
After the Games the buildings will offer high-quality office and commercial space. This will bring opportunities to the area. The new facilities will provide around 120,000 square metres of employment space. The use of the facilities after the Games will be considered and consulted on as part of the London Development Agency’s (LDA) plans for developing the area after the Games – this is known as the Legacy Masterplan Framework.
The IBC/MPC site has been cleared, a developer is due to be appointed shortly ready for construction to start in 2009.
