Consultation for 2012 venues

4 February 2008

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is putting consultation at the heart of the development of the Olympic Park as the planning application for the first of the main venues is submitted.

The planning application for the Aquatics Centre was submitted after a targeted consultation process with potential user groups including young people and mothers, older people, multi-faith and disability groups and community swimming clubs.

ODA Head of Town Planning Niall McNevin said:

'As the planning application shows, the Aquatics Centre will be a state of the art venue for the 2012 Games and a much needed new community and elite sport facility in legacy.

'In order to ensure we realise the full legacy potential of the venue, we have been consulting with a wide range of potential users to ensure that the venue meets the needs of a wide range of people and groups.'

The Aquatics Centre application was submitted to the ODA’s Planning Decisions Team (PDT), an independent body responsible for processing all applications relating to the Olympic Park on behalf of the ODA’s Planning Committee, which includes Councillors from the four boroughs in the Olympic Park and externally appointed independent members.

The application will now be subject to a statutory consultation period which will include public drop-in sessions and letters to residents living in the near vicinity of the Olympic Park.

Another round of public consultation will take place when the application for the Olympic Stadium is submitted in May 2008.

Notes to Editors

Public drop-in sessions on the Aquatic Centre planning application will take place in the South Mall of Stratford Shopping Centre on Thursday 14 Feb (6pm-8:30pm), Friday 15 Feb (2pm-7pm) and Saturday 16 Feb (10am-2pm)

The London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act gave the Olympic Delivery Authority the power to set up the ODA Planning Committee so that planning decisions within the Olympic Park area are decided by one dedicated planning team, to help ensure the venues and infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are delivered on time.

The outline planning premissions for the Olympic Park, venues, infrastructure and utilities were granted in September 2007, after extensive community consultation including roadshows where over 5,000 people attended to have their say on the Masterplan for the Park.

Details of planning applications submitted, planning decisions and dates of meetings can be accessed at the ODA Olympic Delivery Authority Planning Decisions Team (ODA PDT) website or at its office in Burford Road, Stratford.
