The site of the Olympic Park is made up of fragmented pockets of land, and in the past has suffered from poor connections between local communities. The structures, bridges and highways project will play a major role in creating new connections across the Olympic Park and leaving an open and accessible area in legacy.
The project has been divided into a number of contract packages to maximise market interest and present opportunities to a range of companies. The first four lots of work, the largest packages within the project, went out to tender in March 2007 and the successful contractors for each package have now been selected:
Lot 1 - Olympic Park North Civils, Roads and Bridges, which includes 5km of roads, 2 land bridges; 1 road bridge; 2 underpasses; retaining walls and other ancillary works:
Skanska Construction Limited
Lot 2 - Olympic Park South Civils, Roads and Bridges, which includes approximately 3km of loop roads, 4 road bridges; 1 footbridge; 1 underpass; retaining walls and other ancillary works: Edmund Nuttall Limited
Lot 3 - Rail Over-Bridges, which includes 3 land bridges; 2 road bridges; retaining walls and other ancillary works: Balfour Beatty Group Limited
Lot 4 - Main Stadium Area Bridges, which includes 1 road bridge; 4 footbridges; retaining walls and other ancillary works: Balfour Beatty Group Limited
Construction work on the structures, bridges and highways within the first 4 packages of works is expected to start from summer 2008 into early 2009.
ODA Director of Infrastructure Simon Wright said: 'The structures, bridges and highways project will be the key to joining the various parts of the Olympic Park jigsaw together, creating new connections across the Park and new links between local communities. Right across the Park we are planning for legacy from the very beginning and this infrastructure will help us create the backbone of the Olympic Park in legacy and a platform for future development.
'Securing world-class firms for these key contracts is an important step forwards and paves the way for us to start work on this essential infrastructure later this year to help us create an open and accessible Park in Games time and in legacy.'
Smaller packages of work within the structures, bridges and highways project also went out to tender last year including the Wetlands Area bridges contract and the Central Park footbridge contract, offering opportunities for small and medium size companies to get involved in the project. Further packages of work are expected to go out to tender later this year and in 2009.
