The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has today begun the search for a contractor to carry out the construction work to regenerate the Greenway, the major public walkway running through the heart of the Olympic Park.
This project is key to regenerating the neglected public spaces in and around the Olympic Park area and will improve access with the creation of a key walking and cycling route before, during and after the 2012 Games.
The 3 km long Greenway, which runs from Victoria Park to West Ham, has previously been poorly-lit and in a state of disrepair, making it underused by the local community.
Kath Markey, ODA project sponsor for the Greenway project said:
“The newly designed and constructed Greenway will revitalise a vital link between Newham, Tower Hamlets and Hackney and will create one of the main access routes to the Olympic Park.
“Adams and Sutherland architects have been working on an innovative re-design of the route which will incorporate recycled materials recovered from other parts of the Olympic Park site, a key part of our commitment to sustainability.
“We have already started temporary work to help improve access until we can open the newly-designed and re-constructed Greenway next summer. The Greenway will then form a key walking and cycling route in the lower Lea Valley before, during and after the 2012, helping achieve our aim of a public transport Games.”
The contract is for the improvement work to The Greenway from Wick Lane to Manor Road and will include installing a new footpath/cycleway, fencing, benches and street furniture and treating reclaimed materials from other parts of the Park to use in the new path surface.
Notes to editors:
1. Adams and Sutherland architects are working on the re-design of the Greenway after winning a design competition in April 2007.
2. A shortlist is due to be finalised in November with the contract awarded early 2008.
3. The section of the Greenway from Stratford High Street to Wick Lane is to be kept open throughout the construction period as a route for pedestrians and cyclists.
