'We are looking for design teams to provide innovative solutions for important temporary arenas such as Basketball and Fencing. Industry has responded positively to this challenge and I’m looking forward to seeing the submissions put forward from the impressive teams on the short list.'

An OJEU contract notice was issued in May 2007 for design teams for the Basketball and Fencing arenas with their appointment expected later this year. The 12,000-capacity Basketball Arena will host the Olympic Basketball preliminaries competition, the shooting and fencing disciplines of the Modern Pentathlon competition and the Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby competitions. The 8,000 capacity Fencing Arena will also host the 4,000 spectators for the Paralympic Wheelchair Fencing and Paralympic Judo competitions.

For temporary venues the ODA is looking for creative solutions that deliver structures that are fit for purpose, efficient, light-weight and economical. They must also meet high safety standards and host test events in the Olympic Park a year before the Games.

Notes to Editors

- The procurement of construction contractors will begin in early 2008 with construction due to complete in 2011 ahead of test events. The ODA is looking to procure individual venue design teams although designers may bid for more than one package.

- To ensure continuity between temporary venues across the park the ODA will manage a collaborative approach with and between each temporary venue design team. The ODA will play an overarching role ensuring, for example, standard designs and suppliers for certain elements, such as seating, incorporate common components.
