The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has begun the search for a company to supply all of the ready-mix concrete needed for the construction of the Olympic Park venues, infrastructure and associated works.
The ODA will award a license to one supplier who will then have the exclusive right to supply ready-mix concrete to all Olympic Park contractors.
The supplier will also need to be able to be able to support the ODA’s sustainable development strategy commitments which include minimising carbon emissions with an emphasis on delivering at least 50 per cent of materials by weight to the Olympic Park through sustainable methods.
ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said:
“This is a key contract for us and will help ensure consistency of supply and stability in price for contractors working on the Olympic site.
“Using just one supplier for a project of this size and scale is a ground-breaking move but the industry is up for the challenge.
“This will dramatically reduce the number of lorries delivering to the site and we will be looking for a supplier who can help us meet our aspirations of using sustainable methods to transport materials to the Olympic Park.”
The company will also build a batching plant and have responsibility for the site-wide delivery, off-loading and distribution of concrete to contractors.
Once the company has been awarded the license they will then have the ability to negotiate with contractors, a process which will be managed and monitored by the ODA. This will help ensure there is cost verification and that there are site-wide negotiated rates.
Indicative volumes at this early pre-design stage suggest that there will be a peak demand for 1000m3 per day.
