The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has today begun the first stage of the construction work that will regenerate The Greenway, a major public walkway running through the heart of the Olympic Park, from Victoria Park to West Ham.
The Greenway is currently in a state of disrepair, poorly lit and underused by the local community. As part of its transport planning for the Games, the ODA will re-design and re-build the walkway, and restore it for use by the local community.
This work will be carried out in two stages.
First, the area will be repaired and resurfaced, including filling in pot-holes and installing lighting on a 1km stretch of the walkway from Pudding Mill Lane to Marshgate Lane. This move will help minimise any potential disruption when the roads through the Olympic Park are closed from July.
The second stage will see designs for how the Greenway will operate in Games and legacy finalised with work starting on construction next year.
Kath Markey, ODA project sponsor for The Greenway project said:
"This is the first step in revitalising a vital link between Newham and Hackney. It is the start of the process to regenerate the neglected public spaces in and around the Olympic Park area.
"The temporary work we are starting this week will help improve access until we can open the newly-designed and re-constructed Greenway next summer.
"The Greenway will then form a key walking and cycling route in the lower Lea Valley before, during and after the 2012, helping achieve our aim of a public transport Games."
Notes to Editors
Last month, Adams and Sutherland were chosen as the practise to re-design the Greenway after winning the design competition
Construction work on the finalised plans is due to the start in the New Year and opening is expected in the summer of 2008.
