Aerial shots show Olympic Park progress

30 November 2007

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) today released aerial photographs of the Olympic Park, showing the progress that has been made to clean and clear the area.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: 'We have made huge progress on the site, demolishing over 100 buildings and cleaning thousands of tonnes of contaminated soil in order to prepare the platform for the Park and venues for the 2012 Games.

'An aerial view gives a unique perspective of the site and clearly shows how a neglected industrial area is being rapidly transformed. As these new photographs show, we are almost half way through the demolition programme and the sites of the permanent venues such as the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre are almost clear.

'We are not complacent though and there is still a huge amount of work to do to prepare for the start of the ‘Big Build’ after Beijing next year.'

The ODA aims to clear and clean the majority of the 2.5 square kilometres Olympic Park by Beijing 2008, which includes demolishing over 220 buildings and cleaning 1.3 million tonnes of contaminated soil with over 90 per cent of waste materials being reused or recycled.

The ODA gained access to the Olympic Park this summer and is already almost half way through its demolition programme with 106 buildings demolished to date. The ODA is also beating its target of reusing or recycling demolition materials.

The photographs can be downloaded for editorial use from the London 2012
image library.
