London 2012 appoints Head of New Media

The London 2012 Organising Committee, the organisation responsible for staging and hosting the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, has appointed Alex Balfour as Head of New Media

Reporting into the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Jackie Brock-Doyle, Alex will be responsible for London2012.com. He will also lead the creation, development and management of online structures and facilities for London 2012 over the next six years.

"The new media landscape is changing at an unprecedented pace. Young people are avid consumers of new media. Our objective is to deliver the best-ever games so our use and understanding of new media must be second to none," said Chief Executive Paul Deighton.

"Alex's experience in building world class new media businesses in a fast changing environment will go a long way to help us achieve this objective."

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to deliver the first truly digital summer Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and harness the power of the Internet and new technologies to build digital communities around a unique brand," said Alex.

"London is a world centre for the digital creative industries and I look forward to working with leading digital businesses over the next six years and showing the world what we can achieve."

Alex has a track record of building, managing and commercialising successful content on the Web, on mobile and on emerging platforms.

As co-founder and Chairman of CricInfo Alex built one of the world's largest sports websites from scratch with 20 million customers. Alex steered CricInfo through the dotcom downturn to profitability before selling it to John Wisden and Co in 2003. Prior to joining CricInfo Alex was a senior member of the team that launched the Guardian Newspaper's websites. Alex has worked for 12 years in new media and was also responsible for award winning websites including the UK's first general election website and the first online government white paper consultation.

More recently Alex co-founded a sports rights company called Investors in Cricket and developed and sold two new properties, an international Twenty20 cricket tournament and a reality cricket show for the Indian market.

Alex joins the London 2012 Organising Committee at the start of this month.
