Olympic Delivery Authority publishes Draft Sustainability Principles

3 August 2006

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) today published its Draft Sustainability Principles and Progress Report.

The Report provides a snapshot of work in progress against the ODA's proposed twelve sustainability objectives. These derive from the twelve sustainability principles consulted on during the planning application for the Olympic Park in 2004.

The 12 objectives support the five sustainability themes of Climate Change, Waste, Biodiversity, Inclusion, and Healthy Living as set out in the London 2102 Sustainability Policy, which is based around the 'Towards a One Planet Olympics' concept that links local and global sustainability initiatives.

ODA contractors will be expected to demonstrate how they will meet these objectives through their proposals, and will be monitored against their delivery by the ODA and its Delivery Partner.

David Higgins, ODA Chief Executive said:

"Today we are publishing our high level Sustainability Principles, which will be followed next year by a detailed Sustainability Strategy. We want to deliver the Olympic Park site in the most sustainable way possible. The ODA will work collaboratively with industry, using its influence and purchasing power, to encourage and enable the delivery of an economically, socially and environmentally responsible Games. We need to ensure a sustainable and lasting legacy for the Lower Lea Valley, London and the UK.'

The ODA's Sustainability Principles are proposed to be:
  • Energy Maximise the opportunities for carbon efficiency whilst reducing the carbon footprint of the Olympic and Legacy development wherever possible.
  • Waste Maximise opportunities to design out waste and provide new waste infrastructure, whilst minimising off site disposal during remediation and construction, through an integrated approach to resource management.
  • Materials Identify, source and use environmentally and socially responsible materials.
  • Biodiversity and ecology Protect and enhance the wildlife and its habitat of the Lower Lea Valley, and enhance access to nature.
  • Land, water, noise, air Maximise positive and minimise adverse impacts on land, water, noise and air quality.
  • Global, local and internal environments Design and build in a sensitive manner for internal and local environments, adaptable to future climates.
  • Culture, heritage and built form Preserve and improve the heritage of the Lower Lea Valley.
  • Transport and mobility Create accessible, pedestrian friendly Olympic Park and Venues, with good connectivity to surrounding areas.
  • Housing and amenity Create new safe, mixed use public space, housing and facilities appropriate to the demographics and character of the Lower Lea Valley.
  • Education and employment Provide new employment and business opportunities locally, regionally and nationally.
  • Health and well-being Provide for new health, recreation, sporting and cultural facilities in the Olympic and Legacy development.
  • Inclusion Involve, communicate and consult effectively with stakeholders, and communities surrounding the Olympic Park.
The ODA is working closely with the London 2012 Games Organising Committee and other agencies to support the London 2012 sustainability policy, which will be developed into a programme wide sustainability plan to be published next spring. The ODA will feed into this process with the publication of the ODA Sustainable Development Strategy early in 2007.
