UK sports facilities can apply to host training camps for teams in the lead up to the London 2012 Games

London 2012 yesterday announced its plans for showcasing the best sporting facilities that the UK has to offer to Olympic and Paralympic Teams across the globe.

National Olympic Committees (NOC) and National Paralympic Committees (NPC) will each receive a copy of London 2012's Guide to UK sporting facilities to assist them in selecting venues at which their athletes can train and prepare for competition in the run-up to the 2012 Games.

The Guide will be issued in summer of 2008, as teams who have been focusing their attentions on training for and competing in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games start to turn their attention towards preparing for London 2012.

Launching the process at the "2012 Delivering for the UK" conference in Leeds yesterday Charles Allen, Chairman of London's Nations & Regions Group, said: "The London 2012 Organising Committee wants to encourage as many international teams as possible to use the UK as a base for their pre-Games training prior to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This guide will contain the best of our facilities right across the UK and give teams and individual athletes a great selection of world-class facilities and support services.

"We will use Pre-Games Training Camps to engage the whole country and spread the benefits of the Olympic and Paralympic Games throughout the UK. This provides a fantastic opportunity for nations and regions of the UK to host an international team of athletes, bringing not only economic benefits, but also helping to inspire communities to support the Games," added Allen.

The process allows UK sporting facilities to assess their suitability for hosting pre-Games training camps for visiting NOCs and NPCs in the run up to 2012 by reviewing the requirements that a visiting nation is likely to have on the London 2012 website.

The website provides information about the sporting requirements and the critical additional support services that visiting teams will need.

Debbie Jevans, Diretor of Sport fo the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: "I am delighted that we are launching this process to identify the very best sporting facilities across the UK. While the standards that we are looking for may seem high, this is necessary to ensure that we provide the athletes with world class facilities so that they can train at venues which have the same standards as those they will be competing at during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"The 2012 Games will be the culmination of years of training and preparation for each and every athlete and we must ensure that they have access to the best possible sporting facilities and support available."

Among the priorities they are likely to need at any possible base are:
  • an exclusive training environment
  • world-class training facilities
  • similar climatic conditions/time zone as Games' venues to promote acclimatisation
  • comfortable but affordable accommodation
  • food appropriate for training athletes, available at times to suit training schedules
  • access to a hospital with an Accident and Emergency Department and advanced scanner technology
  • local suppliers of cars, mini-vans and coaches for transport between accommodation and training venue
  • security for athletes and support staff
  • and proximity to airports or easy access to transport networks.
Sports facilities who believe they meet the standards for hosting a Camp can then apply for inclusion within London 2012's Guide using the online submission form available. The website address will be live from Monday 24 July 2006 and sports facilities will have until the end of January 2007 to apply.

Submissions will be collated through the Nations & Regions Group (NRG) prior to submission to the London 2012 organising committee, who will use the NRG's input to inform their selection of the final facilities for inclusion within the guide.
