Sir Craig Reedie and Dick Palmer receive honours from Buckingham Palace

12 July 2006

Sir Craig Reedie and Dick Palmer, two crucial figures in the London 2012 bid team, today received their honours for services to sport from Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Sir Craig, who was Chairman of the British Olympic Association (BOA), and is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), received his knighthood, and Dick Palmer received a CBE.

Sir Craig was Chairman of the BOA from 1992 to 2005. As an IOC member he has been involved in the organisation of the Athens 2004 Games and the Beijing 2008 Games. He led the failed bid to bring the Olympic Games to Manchester, and following on from that he was instrumental in persuading the Government and other agencies to support the London bid for the 2012 Games.

Sir Craig lives in Glasgow.

Dick Palmer was Technical Director of the London 2012 bid. He is Executive Vice President of the BOA and a Director of the British Olympic Foundation as well as Sports Coach UK. He was Chef de Mission for the British Olympic team for the Winter and Summer Olympic Games of 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996. He comes from Llangwm in Pemrokeshire.

Sir Craig said: "This has been the culmination of many years of enjoyable effort, seeing the British team success at Sydney and Athens, and seeing London win the greatest prize in sport, winning the right to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This is a great honour for me and it has been a privilege to be involved in British sport."

Dick Palmer said: "The London Bid demonstrated that when everyone pulls together the politicians, the City, sport and the great creative talent available in the UK - that everything is possible. At London 2012 the team was well led, focused, motivated and it was very special to be part of such a unique group of people."
