London 2012 appoints General Counsel

The London 2012 Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games has appointed Terry Miller as its General Counsel.

Terry will head up the London 2012 legal team. She will be responsible for all legal aspects of the work of the Organising Committee including protecting its brand and all its intellectual property interests. Terry's team will be also be responsible for drawing up over 7,000 contracts over the next six years, for agreements with venues and hotels, through to commercial partners, contractors and suppliers.

In her role as General Counsel, Terry will also act as the Organising Committee's Ethical Compliance Officer. She reports to Chief Executive Paul Deighton and takes up her position in October. Terry takes over from Charles Wijeratna, who moves to the Commercial Department as Director of Commercial Negotiations.

Paul Deighton today welcomed Terry's appointment as a key addition to London 2012's senior management team. "The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games is the world's biggest peacetime event and logistical operation. It involves more than 200 nations, thousands of athletes and spectators, and several of the world's most prestigious businesses and companies, whose interests all have to be protected in order to achieve efficient planning and staging of the Games," he said.

"It is vital that the proper legal and ethical infrastructure is put in place," said Paul. "Terry has a vast amount of experience in this field and will make a huge contribution to the team."

Terry Miller said: "I am delighted to be joining the London 2012 team in such a challenging and exciting position. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and I look forward to contributing all my energy and experience to its success."

Terry has been International General Counsel of investment bank Goldman Sachs (GS), based in London, where she was Counsel to the European Management Committee and responsible for all GS lawyers in Europe and Asia. She joined GS in London in 1989, and became a Managing Director in 1997 and a Participating Managing Director in 2002. She is a member of the Bank of England's Financial Markets Law Committee.

She began her legal career with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, where she was a Branch Chief in the Enforcement Division, and after that was a partner of the law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, (now Kirkpatrick Lockhart Nicholson Graham). In 2005 Terry was recognised as one of Europe's "top 50 General Counsels".

Terry, who was born in Detroit, Michigan, is a naturalised British citizen. She is married with two children, and lives in Surrey. She is a keen amateur horse rider.
