Be part of 2012 - Roadshow in the South West of England

17 July 2006

The 2012 Roadshow travelling the country from 6 to 27 July to spread the inspirational message of the Olympic Games has now notched up almost 1,500 miles after touring the South West on 15 and 16 July.

The "Be Part of 2012 Roadshow" bus, unveiled in Trafalgar Square on 6 July, stopped at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, where sailors from over 60 countries were competing in the International Sailing Federation World Youth Sailing Championships. The next stop was Tiverton for the Devon Youth Games, before moving on to the impressive new sports facilities at Brickfields Recreation Ground. On Sunday the Roadshow called in at the University of Bath, where the City of Bath Triathlon was taking place. The final stop in the South West was in Bristol for music and dance performances in Explore @ Bristol.

After eight days of travelling the 2012 Roadshow bus has now made 30 of its 65 scheduled stops in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Olympic Gold medallist Ed Coode spoke to a crowd of hundreds of young people competing at the Devon Youth Games in Tiverton. He said:

"The Olympic Games are like a sports day for the whole world."

Jude Kelly, Chairman of Ceremonies, Culture and Education for London 2012, said: "The 2012 Games will have a global reach while bringing local benefits, stimulating people to think about what could be possible - how every individual can strive towards their own gold medal."

Everywhere it goes the 2012 Roadshow brings senior figures from London 2012, the Government and sport to talk about progress made in the last year, future plans and to explain how everybody can be part of 2012.
