A trip down memory lane: Athletics

The London 2012 Athletics competition gets underway today at the Olympic Stadium. But did you know that, on this day in 1936, Olympic legend Jesse Owens won his first gold medal?

The photo above shows Jesse Owens competing at the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games. On 3 August 1936 the USA star won the 100m sprint, his first gold medal of the Games. Jesse went on to have enormous success in Berlin, winning a further three gold medals to establish his place in Olympic history.

The next photo shows the men’s Steeplechase taking place at Wembley Stadium during the London 1948 'Austerity Games', hotly contested by athletes from France and Sweden. The eventual winner was number 357, Tore Sjostrand. At London 2012, Kenya's Brimin Kiprop Kipruto is among the favourites to win.
