Australian Meares earned gold due Great Britain rival Victoria Pendleton's relegation in the first race and a tactical masterclass in the second.

Although Meares, 28, is still harbouring hopes of defending her title at Rio 2016, she first plans to spend some time away from the sport.

'I'm looking forward to taking a break,' she said after collecting a second Olympic gold to go with the one she won in Athens.

I want at least a season away from the sport just to give some time back to my family and friends. I've asked so much sacrifice from them for so long.

'I am currently looking at Rio but I don't want to make that decision now because you can be swayed by the emotions.'
