Giant Olympic Rings unveiled in Cardiff

A giant set of Olympic Rings has been launched today outside Cardiff’s historic City Hall, exactly three months before the city hosts the first sporting event of the London 2012 Games.

Nearly 1,500 hours were spent designing, engineering and fabricating the Rings and their 11-tonne supporting structure.

The 18m long, 8m high Rings will provide a stunning backdrop for Cardiff’s celebrations when the Olympic Torch visits the city on 25 May and when the Millennium Stadium hosts 11 matches during the London 2012 Football Tournament.

London 2012 Organising Committee Chair Seb Coe said: 'The Olympic Rings are an iconic symbol, inspiring athletes and uniting people around the world.

'Being launched exactly three months before the Millennium Stadium hosts the very first sporting event of London 2012, they show that Wales is ready to welcome the world'.

The revealing of the Olympic Rings in Cardiff coincided with the launch of the full London 2012 Festival programme for Wales.

London 2012 Festival Director Ruth Mackenzie, Cultural Olympiad Board Chair Tony Hall and Arts Council of Wales Chair Dai Smith and Chief Executive Nick Capaldi were joined by Welsh Government Minister Huw Lewis and a selection of creative talent from Wales to launch the programme.

Newly announced projects as part of the London 2012 Festival in Wales include: Busk on the Usk, a free festival in Newport; Peach Camp, a celebration of the beauty of the nation's coastline; and the Big Dance 2012, taking place at Cardiff Mela.
