Highlights of a varied route will include a steam-boat cruise on scenic Lake Winderemere. Fourteen-year-old Stephanie Booth from Windermere will carry the Flame on the boat. Stephanie was nominated for her time and dedication to triathlon.
A total of 114 Torchbearers will carry the Flame during the day. The day’s first Torchbearer is Demelza Powell, 34, from Dalbeattie, who will carry the Flame at the statue of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet. Demi was nominated for her voluntary work with disabled children and as a carer.
Torchbearers also include Michael Park, 47, a member of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, who has dealt with events including the Cockermouth floods of 2009.
An evening celebration will take place at The Glebe in Bowness-on-Windermere. The celebration line-up includes singer-songwriter and Mercury Prize nominee Katy B. Her performance will include ‘Anywhere in the World’, the song for Coca-Cola's Olympic Games campaign recorded with Mark Ronson.
The celebration will also feature a special event to mark the start of the London 2012 Festival, which kicks off today. A spectacular show will see streams of colour and light blaze across the skies above Lake Windermere.
The Flame will travel through the following communities today: Dumfries, Annan, Eastriggs, Gretna, Carlisle, Wigton, Aspatria, Marypot, Flimby, Workington, Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Keswick, Grasmere, Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere.
