Day 23: Olympic Flame visits Orkney and Shetland islands on journey from Inverness to Stornoway

The Olympic Flame will travel 29.7 miles today, visiting the Orkney and Shetland islands and taking in John O’Groats on its journey from Inverness to Stornoway.

The day begins at St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, the largest town in Orkney, the Flame being carried by Inga Kemp, 22, from Orkney. Inga was nominated for her work in netball and hockey youth development coaching. Inga will be followed by 19 other inspirational Torchbearers.

From Orkney the Flame will travel to Shetland where it will start its journey through Lerwick carried by John Nicolson, 74, from Scalloway. John was nominated for the instrumental role that he played in the provision of the sport and community facilities that Shetland currently benefits.

John will be followed by 19 more inspirational Torchbearers as the Flame visits the ‘Welcome to Shetland’ gate, ‘The Knab Lookout’, and travels across Clickimin Loch in a boat, before arriving at a Community Festival in Lerwick carried by Faye Richardson, 22, from Shetland. Faye was nominated for her dedication to athletics and her work as a local lifeguard.

After visiting the Orkney and Shetland islands, the Flame will visit John O’Groats on its way to Stornoway.
