Day 55: Flame sets off from Stonehenge as it makes its way to Weymouth

On Thursday 12 July, the Olympic Torch Relay will set off from Stonehenge in the early hours of the day before travelling 107.80 miles to Weymouth, carried by 116 inspirational Torchbearers along the way.

Michael Johnson, the US Olympic gold medallist and one of the greatest sprinters in history, will start the day with the Flame at Stonehenge for sunrise. He will then pass the Flame on to Will Copp, 17, from West Overton, who was selected for his determination to succeed in everything he puts his mind to despite suffering from Cerebral Palsy.

Other inspirational torchbearers today include athlete Katrina Hughes, 22, from Portland, who will carry the Flame to the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy, venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing completions. She will then hand the Flame to Rodney Pattisson, 68, a double Olympic gold medallist in Sailing from the 1968 and 1972 Games: Rodney will carry the Flame as it is sailed out across the harbour. Part way across, near to the Pleasure Pier, he will hand the Flame to Ryan Hope, 20, from Weymouth, who will carry the Flame as it is rowed to Weymouth beach.

The evening celebration will take place on Weymouth beach. The line-up includes music from Wretch 32, a dance troupe who will provide a unique fusion of street performance, theatre and sport, as well as dance act Twist and Pulse. There will also be entertainment from local acts staged by Weymouth and Portland Council.

On day 55 the Flame will be carried through the following communities: Salisbury, Wilton, Barford St Martin, Fovant, Ludwell, Shaftesbury, Fontmell Magna, Iwerne Minster, Stourpaine, Blandford Forum, Winterborne Whitechurch, Milborne St Andrew, Puddletown, Dorchester, Winterbourne Abbas, Bridport, Chideock, Lyme Regis, Burton Bradstock, Abbotsbury, Portesham, Chickerell, Wyke Regis, Osprey Quay and Weymouth.
