World champion Dai Greene of Great Britain was the fourth fastest in 48.98.
Amantle Montsho, the world champion, and Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu were among the qualifiers in the women's 400m, with USA's Sanya Richards-Ross only 12th fastest after easing down considerably when winning her heat.
In the men's Shot Put, USA's Reese Hoffa led the qualifiers with a best of 21.36m, while gold medal favourite Krisztian Pars of Hungary topped the Hammer qualifiers with a best of 79.37m.
Kazakhstan's Olga Rypakova headed the qualifiers in the women's Triple Jump with 14.79m.
