Crowds line the streets for Olympic Road Races

Huge crowds are expected to turn out to watch the men’s and women’s Road Races this weekend. The men’s event got underway at 10am this morning on The Mall. With Britain’s Mark Cavendish among the favourites to take gold, passionate fans have packed the streets to watch.

Cyclists climb Box Hill
Competitors make their way up the climb of Box Hill during the Road Race.

Viewing capacity at both races is limited so spectators are advised to get there early and to use public transport, or walk and cycle, to get around. Those lucky enough to live near a route are advised to stay local.

For more advice and information throughout the day, spectators can follow us on Twitter @L2012spectators. For live travel updates and details of road closures, follow @GAOTG or visit the Get Ahead of the Games website

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has said: 'The road events offer a great opportunity to see some of the world’s top athletes in competition and to experience the numerous other attractions London has to offer. Given the huge numbers of people who will be in London for the Games, it is really important that people follow our travel advice and plan ahead.'
