Australia glide past Spain

Australia eased to their second successive men's Hockey victory, taking their goal tally into double figures with a 5-0 victory over Spain, but there was more injury misery for their opponents.

Spain lost Santi Freixa to a broken arm in their opening draw with Pakistan and their next most-experienced player Pol Amat sustained a suspected dislocated shoulder today.

The team have taken one point from two matches, while Australia top Pool A with six points.

World number ones Australia stepped up a gear from their 6-0 win over South Africa and were ahead early on when Russell Ford produced an expert near-post finish from Mark Knowles' pass.

Matt Butturini added a second with a shot on the turn and Simon Orchard converted Matt Gohdes' cross to make it 3-0 at half-time, by which time Amat had departed.

A brilliant 50-yard aerial ball out from the back by Chris Ciriello sent Glenn Turner racing through to score the fourth and then Edward Ockenden deflected in Ciriello's slapped pass from a penalty corner, with defender Ciriello then hitting a post with another set-piece.

The match became increasingly niggly in the second half as Spain's frustrations grew but Australia's dominance was underlined by the statistics, which recorded 21 shots on goal.
