Australia bounce to victory over USA

Australia made it back-to-back wins to move themselves into semi-final contention as a 1-0 victory took them three points clear of opponents the USA in Group B.
Australia defeat USA in women's Hockey
Anna Flanagan of Australia scores the goal during the women's Hockey match against the USA on Day 6 of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Hockeyroos played the better game but struggled to break down the USA, with defender Anna Flanagan flicking a couple of penalty corners either side of the target in the first half.

USA's set-piece routine proved slightly more effective as just before half-time Rachel Dawson's driven shot beat goalkeeper Toni Cronk and was only prevented from going in by Jodie Schulz's foot.

A penalty stroke was awarded but Cronk was not so easily beaten this time as she dived low to her right to keep out Lauren Crandall's flick.

But in the 33rd minute Flanagan, having taken brief instructions from the bench, got her effort spot-on with a powerful high flick which Amy Swensen could not keep out.

The second half was much of the same with Megan Rivers and Fiona Boyce both going close late on as Australia moved on to six points.
