Olympic Park cabling project completed

The underground cabling that will allow powerlines to move into tunnels under the Olympic Park has been completed. It will mean more than 50 overhead pylons can be taken down across the Park.

The tunnels were finished on time last year and now 200km of electrical cables have now been installed – enough to stretch from London to Nottingham. Monitoring and ventilation equipment have been put in place. More than 9,000 brackets to carry cabling along the tunnel walls have also been installed.

The cables will now be tested before the power is switched underground later in the summer. Then work to remove the overhead powerlines and pylons across the Olympic Park will start towards the end of the year.

Olympic Delivery Authority Chief Executive David Higgins, today visited workers on the powerlines project and congratulated them on reaching this milestone. He said: ‘With construction work set to begin in the Olympic Park later this month, the delivery of the powerlines project is vital in “unlocking” the site for the large-scale development of world class venues and infrastructure.’
