With just over a year to go until London 2012 gets underway, the first British athlete to qualify for the Games has been confirmed.

Keri-Anne Payne's victory in the 10km open water event at the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai has automatically sealed her spot at next year's Olympic Games.

Successfully defending her 2009 World Championship title, the swimmer also won Britain's first gold medal of the Championships, in a race which saw the top ten qualify for the Games.

Payne won the silver medal at Beijing 2008 and will be hoping to go one better in the London 2012 Marathon Swimming 10km event next year, which is set to take place in Hyde Park in central London.

Before this, she will be invited to compete in the official London 2012 test event – the London 10km Marathon Swimming International – which is taking place on 13 August 2011, also in Hyde Park.
