Michael Craig-Martin is one of 12 leading artists behind the official London 2012 posters.The commission, called @thistimeofyear, is bringing a piece of London 2012 Festival art to Scotland’s capital, marking the beginning of the Olympic and Paralympic year.
From 28 December, partygoers will be able to download a specially created app from the Hogmanay website. Developed using augmented reality technology, the app can be used from 30 December when revellers will be able to point their phone at Edinburgh Castle to see a virtual surprise created by London 2012 poster artist Michael Craig-Martin.
At midnight on 31 December revellers can use the app to send a special 2012 e-card to friends and family through social media.
'Fun dimension'
Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival Director Ruth Mackenzie said: ‘We’re excited to be working with Edinburgh’s Hogmanay for our first countdown event which, in this digital age, brings together new technologies and art for the New Year celebrations in Edinburgh.
'We hope @thistimeofyear will bring a fun dimension to the celebrations as we see in the Olympic and Paralympic year.’
@thistimeofyear is a London 2012 Festival commission from Magic Lantern, produced in association with Unique Events and the City of Edinburgh Council for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay.
Michael Craig-Martin said: ‘I am delighted to contribute through new technological media to this exciting celebration which is one of the countdown events for the London 2012 Festival. Next year should prove an important time for art and culture as well outstanding sporting events.’
