Hugh Robertson MP and Olympian David Moorcroft take part in celebrations marking the award The Inspire programme officially recognises projects which engage young people using the values of London 2012. Only the most accessible, participative, inspiring and stimulating projects and events achieve the mark.
A part of the Fire Fit initiative, the two West Midlands Fire Service programmes – the Young Fire Fighters Association (YFA) and the One Body One Life project – have inspired and benefited the community using the power of the Games.
The YFA is a uniformed youth organisation open to young people, which teaches about responsibility, team work and the importance of good communication.
The One Body One Life Inspire project is a family-focused intervention co-ordinated by Coventry City Council, aimed at improving health and wellbeing as a family through education and activity.
Following the presentation of the award at the event in Victoria Square, teams took part in a fire engine-pulling competition, which pitted firefighters and youngsters from the West Midlands Fire Service Inspire projects against each other.
Presenting the award, Minister for Sport and Olympics, Hugh Robertson said: ‘I am very pleased to present the 1,500th Inspire award to an organisation that is helping us achieve our vision to use London 2012 to inspire young people across the UK’.
Since the Inspire programme began over three years ago, more than 14 million people have participated in projects across the UK.
