Malawi sign up to train in Gloucestershire

The University of Gloucestershire is to play its part in London 2012 by hosting the 40-strong Malawi Olympic team in the build-up to the Olympic Games.

The  Malawi National Olympic Committee signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the University, which will see them train at facilities across the county.

Around 25 athletes and 15 coaches and officials are expected to attend and the University will provide a base for the team to reside, socialise and prepare for the event using the University sports training facilities.  They also hope to deliver a range of opportunities for people living in Gloucestershire to meet the team.

Professor David James, Associate Dean (Research) at the University, said: 'This is a great opportunity for the county of Gloucestershire to play a part in the preparation of the athletes and for the whole Malawi team to become a part of the Gloucestershire community.'

Councillor Paul James said: 'By working together we have shown that we can provide first class facilities for world class athletes and their support teams.

'I am delighted that the superb standard of our combined resources have been recognized at international level in this way. It is great news for local people that the spirit of the Olympics will be in evidence so close to home.'
