The standard is inspired by London 2012’s vision to use the power of the Games to create lasting change.
To achieve BS8901 status, a venue, event or organisation must have thought about how to manage its resources effectively, how to provide a lasting legacy to the local community, and must have created a sustainability management framework to ensure they are always driving continuous improvement in sustainability.
Sailing competitors at the London 2012 Games will now benefit from a well-managed sustainability programme: Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy will recycle sails, source food locally, use solar energy and support the local community – helping the London 2012 Organising Committee master the huge challenge of hosting the Games in the most sustainable way possible.
David Stubbs, Head of Sustainability at LOCOG, said: 'We are immensely proud of Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy's achievement and I believe they will lead the way for the sailing industry in the UK to follow.'
