London 2012 transport connections on track to deliver early legacy

Improvements to Stratford Regional Station are on track to ensure it can accommodate the increased number of visitors to Stratford and the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Games.

Stratford Regional Station, which first opened in the 1830s, is benefiting from more than £200 million investment throughout, with the improvements allowing around 120,000 passengers and 200 trains every hour to call at the station during the Games.

Investment is trebling the capacity of the station, platforms have been widened and lengthened, staircases added and the first six of nine lifts are now in service to improve accessibility.

Hugh Sumner, Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Director of Transport, said: ‘Our robust plan to improve transport is one of strongest physical legacies from the Games and is being delivered now – before they have even started.

‘While the bulk of these works have been accelerated because of the Games, the benefits are far wider reaching and will leave a lasting transport legacy in this part of London.’

The main station works, which are due to be completed by late 2010, are among a list of ten transport milestones detailed in Connected – a document published today by the ODA.
