Leading GB boxers visit ExCeL - London 2012 Boxing venue

Leading GB boxers including James DeGale today visited ExCeL London, one of London 2012’s key venues at Games time.

Boxers Hannah Beharry, James DeGale and Lesley Sackey visit ExCeLBoxers Hannah Beharry, James DeGale and Lesley Sackey are impressed by London 2012 venue ExCeL

The visit came as the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) began a public consultation about plans to convert ExCeL from an exhibition centre into a venue in 2012. The venue is due to host seven Olympic events - including the showcase Boxing events - and six Paralympic events.

Olympic gold medallist James DeGale said: 'I think the Games coming to London is amazing – it will really inspire young people and give them something to look forward to.

'It’ll be the biggest show on the earth and not just good for the athletes but for the residents and the country too. I can’t wait for the Games.'

Lesley Sackey and Hannah Beharry also visited the venue, hoping to be back competing in 2012 when Women's Boxing will feature on the Olympic programme for the first time.

Lesley said: 'This is the first time I’ve been to ExCeL and it’s really exciting to know that I could be here representing Great Britain!

'London 2012 is the perfect opportunity to showcase what female boxing is about and it means the world that I can do it on my home turf and have that support here in London.

'The fact that Women’s Boxing has been included as an event at London 2012 Games has given me an incredible boost and really helps me believe I can now go all the way. It’s opened the door for amateur boxers – it’s absolutely massive.'

The local community consultation takes place from 21-23 January, before LOCOG submits a planning application. Find out more
