Local people get early benefits from London 2012 transport improvements

The first Docklands Light Railway (DLR) train carriages that have been co-funded by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) have been delivered to Stratford Regional Station.

The ODA has contributed £20m for 22 new carriages ahead of the London 2012 Games. These carriages will begin to enter service from next month and will then be used to form the three-car train service that DLR will introduce early in 2010.

ODA Director of Transport Hugh Sumner said: ‘The Games will bring a wealth of benefits to Londoners before, during and after 2012, with DLR passengers among the first to feel the benefit via this next generation of trains. The Games will leave a remarkable legacy with the first signs of delivery already taking shape, almost three years before the Games.’

In total 55 new carriages have been ordered and will see the DLR fleet grow from 94 trains to 149.

The ODA has invested £80m in the DLR to allow upgrades and improvements to be made before 2012. The DLR will serve all the competition venues in the Olympic Park as well as events taking place at ExCeL London, Woolwich Royal Artillery Barracks and Greenwich Park.
