Works starts on cycling and walking network for Olympic Park

Improvement works have started on The Greenway, an important cycle and walking route to the Olympic Park.

The 2.3km stretch of The Greenway that links the Park to Victoria Park and West Ham Station is being resurfaced and widened to improve the cycleway and footpath. New signage, seating and improved access points are also being installed.

Building work will reuse materials from the Park such as bricks, manhole and drain covers, bollards, granite cobbles and kerbs.

Trees and bushes are being planted on the banks of the Greenway to create a greener space for people to enjoy and new habitats for wildlife.

Olympic Delivery Authority Chief Executive David Higgins said: ‘These improvements will open up this important walking and cycling path to thousands more people before, during and after the London 2012 Games. Wildflowers and native bushes and trees along the Greenway will also create new habitats for wildlife and create a greener space for people.’

From 18 May 2009 until spring 2010 the section of the Greenway between Marshgate Lane and Stratford High Street will be diverted. This is necessary for public safety reasons as works will be taking place below the railway line bridge on Marshgate Lane.
