A fourth-place finish in Lucerne was enough to place him at the top of the world rankings after earlier success in the three-event series.

Campbell told The Guardian: "I'm delighted with this result. It was more than I expected at the start of the season."

Both the British men's and women's fours also confirmed their world champion status.

The men powered to victory over the Netherlands while the women beat Germany with an impressive four-second lead.
